Photo Caption: Day 56: Today’s piece is by Premier Pottery Preston from their Remued line. This is shape 174 from the late series circa late 1940’s to the mid 1950’s. Quite an odd little thing as it is a combination candlestick and ashtray in one. Possibly due to the late period of manufacture this shape is hard to find.

Photo Caption: Day 55: Today’s piece is another by Bakewell Bros from their Newtone Art Ware line circa 1930’s. Blue pieces aren’t exactly rare but certainly harder to find.

Photo Caption: Day 54: Today’s piece is another from the Van Diemen pottery but this is a little different being that it is the only piece i have seen signed by co-founder and ex McHugh potter Ross Clifford. What happened to Ross after leaving Van Diemen we don’t know but I’m sure it’d be an interesting tale.

Photo Caption: Day 53: Today’s piece is by the Van Diemen pottery of Hobart. Van Diemen was a partnership between Mylie Peppin and ex McHugh potter Ross Clifford. It’s uncertain how much involvement Mylie Peppin had in the running of the pottery or indeed if she really made much of it. According to the Glenda King book on Mylie she left for England not long after the pottery was set up and upon her return Ross was gone and the pottery closed. The book doesn’t mention why the pottery ceased operation but an old article in the Mercury tells of an industrial accident involving a child at the pottery who was working there after school and holidays at the request of his mother. Clifford was fined (rather unfairly i reckon) for using child labour. I have nothing to back it up at this time but my thoughts are that after this incident the pottery moved north to the Launceston region. I say this because of two things. At some point the quality increased significantly and these better quality pieces can be found with stickers saying “Souvenir of Launceston”. Or maybe to throw a spanner in the works that story could just as easily work the other way round.

Photo Caption: Day 52: Today’s piece is another purchase from the weekend a wall plaque by NSW ceramic artist Alexander Takacs. I’m told this is part of a set of 4 Australian Aboriginal wall plaques so only 3 more to find! Not a bad size either at about 37cm high.

Photo Caption: Day 51: Today’s piece is by Wembley Ware out of Subiaco, Perth, Western Australia. For a place so far away from Western Australia you sure do find a few Wembley Ware pieces. A great find from the weekend is this Dhu Fish vase by Wembley Ware. There are 2 versions of this vase a large and small size. This is the small size. Many years ago before i knew i collected Australian pottery i had the large version of this vase sitting on top of a very large speaker in my bedroom while listening to Lou Reeds album Transformer. Needleess to say the experience did not end well for the fish and to this day I’m still waiting to acquire another large fish vase.

Photo Caption: Day 50: Today’s piece is by Barsony Ceramics and is another of last weeks purchases. The name Barsony usually conjures up images of the exotic black lady lamps they were famous for so this figure of a young boy is a bit unusual. Not as popular as the ladies but still a nice little piece.

Photo Caption: Day 49: Today’s piece is unmarked but attributed to the John Campbell pottery of Launceston, Tasmania. That much I’m pretty sure of. What the meaning is of what is written on it is a different story. To my eye the applied lettering reads “GIFFCOO”. Is it a nickname, acronym, house name, foreign word or just a made up thing to keep me guessing? This piece stands 33cm high and is quite a substantial piece to say the least. It was a tip shop find and was actually painted white with the lettering picked out in gold
I’ve done all the usual searches but turned up nothing in regards to tge mystery lettering. Help!?!

Photo Caption: Day 48: Today’s piece is by Trent Art Ware of Bexley NSW. These pieces are somewhat of a mystery wrapped in a riddle. Around 1955 Bakewells was bought out by James Hardie and the rights to the Trent Art Ware name sold (possibly) to some former employees who operated out of a premisis in Bexley. As far as I can tell the lines they produced are completely different to anything produced at Bakewells and seem to consist mainly of these hand painted style pieces. Like this piece they sometimes have the old Trent sticker on them but I find it hard to consider them “real” Trent pieces. They have a place in the story of Bakewells and the Newtone and Trent wares but how much I don’t know.

Photo Caption: Day 47: Today’s piece is by Mashman Bros. Yes, another unmarked piece again but a known Mashman shape and glaze. This is the small frog made by Mashman which is pretty hard to find. There is a BIG toad garden ornament but you will probably see 10 of these frogs before you see another Toad.
