Day 49: John Campbell GIFFCOO vase
Photo Caption: Day 49: Today’s piece is unmarked but attributed to the John Campbell pottery of Launceston, Tasmania. That much I’m pretty sure of. What the meaning is of what is written on it is a different story. To my eye the applied lettering reads “GIFFCOO”. Is it a nickname, acronym, house name, foreign word or just a made up thing to keep me guessing? This piece stands 33cm high and is quite a substantial piece to say the least. It was a tip shop find and was actually painted white with the lettering picked out in gold
I’ve done all the usual searches but turned up nothing in regards to tge mystery lettering. Help!?!

Day 42: Cynthia Mitchell Wall Plaque
Photo Caption: Day 42: Today’s piece is another piece by my fav post war Tasmanian potter Cynthia Mitchell and what a piece it is! This is Skimbleshanks the Railway cat who drives the mail train. He is from T.S. Eliot’s, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. My guess is this 3D wall plaque is a complete one off. There are 14 or so poems in the book and my guess is there is a wall plaque for every poem (I know of the existence of 3 other T.S. Eliot cat plaques). I love this piece and waited a number of years for one to turn up. I wouldn’t be surprised if the “missing” 10 or so plaques have migrated to the mainland or indeed overseas. Fingers crossed they haven’t been consigned to the land fill.

Day 37: Les Blakebrough Beaker
Photo Caption: Day 37: Today’s piece is by Tasmanian master potter Les Blakebrough. I always call these Sake cups but it might be a bit big for that so I might go for beaker. Either way it’s a perfect little piece of antipodean orientalism (see what i did there!? 😒). #AustralianPottery #AustralianArtPottery #Pottery #Ceramics #instapottery #AustralianDesign #TasmanianPottery #LesBlakebrough #australianceramics #TasmanianArt #365DaysofAustralianPottery

Day 35: Port Arthur Vase
Photo Caption: Day 35: Today’s piece is a bit of a mystery. Inscribed “See Port Arthur” around the neck this vase is unmarked but undoubtedly Tasmanian in origin. The shape is not one I have seen before and the glaze is odd too. Part John Campbell part McHugh and by the looks of it too early to be Van Diemen. Circa 1930s.

Day 34: Amelia Burrows Cup and Saucer
Photo Caption: Day 34: Today’s piece is another early hand painted china piece by Launceston based artist Amelia Burrows circa 1900. I thought i would post another Burrows Studio piece after seeing @robbieburrowsart fantastic photo of her Great Grandmother Amelia hard at work in her studio. Thanks also to @oxalis_curator for the heads up.

Day 31: Eileen Brooker Vase
Photo Caption: Day 31: Today’s piece is another by Hobart icon Eileen Brooker. The photo makes it look much bigger than it is. It’s only about 12cm high and 5cm in diameter hence the difficulty getting a nice clear signature on the base. This piece has a nice wax resist decoration. I’m guessing it is circa 1970s.

Day 30: Amelia Burrows Plate
Photo Caption: Day 30: Although not exactly Australian pottery today’s piece still fits with my Australian ceramics collection. This plate (more than likely an English made blank) was hand painted by Amelia Burrows wife of Launceston photographer Alfred Edward Burrows circa 1900. The scene is titled “Near Wynyard NW Tasmania”. #AustralianPottery #AustralianArtPottery #AustralianStudioPottery #australianceramics #AustralianStudioChinaPainting #ChinaPainting #TasmanianPottery #TasmanianCeramics #TasmanianArt #Pottery #Ceramics #instapottery #WynyardTasmania #365DaysofAustralianPottery

Day 27: Alice Mylie Peppin Vase
Photo Caption: Day 27: Today’s piece is by Iconic Tasmanian potter Alice Mylie Peppin (known as Mylie Peppin). Mylie became interested in pottery after visiting an exhibition held by Maude Poynter and her cousin Violet Mace. Soon after Maude became Mylie’s teacher. This chance meeting became a life long obsession for Mylie which resulted in a career spanning 7 decades from the 1930s to the 1990s. Mylie taught pottery just about everywhere to just about everyone including the Lachlan Park Hospital which will get it’s own mention somewhere along the line. This piece is dated 1959 and if you have been in an opshop in southern Tasmania you would have seen something very similar in this same glaze combo sitting on the shelves. This style of decoration must have been one of Mylie’s standard lessons. After seeing so many pots like this with random names and initials on the base it was an absolute shock to pick this one up on Monday with Mylie’s distinctive AMP initials on the base.

Day 24: Cynthia Mitchell Charger
Photo Caption: Day 24: Today’s piece is by Tasmanian potter Cynthia Mitchell. Not only is this by my favourite post WWII Tasmanian potter but it is just about my favourite piece by her too. It was a gift from a good friend and although it’s almost in 2 pieces I love it. I became a little obsessed with her work and reckon my collection is the largest collection of her pottery and might well be the largest collection of a single 20th century studio potter in private hands in Australia. I must own more than 200 pieces with few if any repeats so be prepared to see a few more pieces throughout the year.

Day 23: Derek Smith Vase
Photo Caption: Day 23: Today’s piece is by Tasmanian potter Derek Smith. Known for his symmetry and clean cut lines and usually in earthy tones this gold lustre is a little bit of a departure from what you’d normally see. Derek is another of my fav Tasmanian potters. If i could fill my house works of this standard I’d be a happy collector.
