Day 47: Mashman Frog Figure
Photo Caption: Day 47: Today’s piece is by Mashman Bros. Yes, another unmarked piece again but a known Mashman shape and glaze. This is the small frog made by Mashman which is pretty hard to find. There is a BIG toad garden ornament but you will probably see 10 of these frogs before you see another Toad.

Day 46: Una Deerbon Vase
Photo Caption: Day 46: Today’s piece is by Melbourne based potter Una Deerbon. Born in Woollarah, NSW, she was a student of the Sydney Art school. She designed clothing for David Jones, produced series of humerous post cards and even opened her own design school. Teacher to her cousin John (Jack) Castle Harris, Eric Juckert and just generally annoyingly over talented. Circa mid 1930s this piece is interesting for Una as she was known for her colorful glazes. I think the monotone white looks much better but that might be a controversial to say out loud but hey you gotta live on the edge I suppose!

Day 32: Newtone Art Ware Shoe
Photo Caption: Day 32: Today’s piece is by Bakewell Bros from their Newtone Art Ware line. I think I might own more pottery shoes than I do real ones (i don’t own many of either if I’m honest). I’m not sure why they were so popular but alot of pre war Australian potters made shoes to be used as small posy vases.

Day 28: Newtone Art Ware Vase
Photo Caption: Day 28: Today’s piece is by Bakewell Bros from their Newtone Art Ware line circa 1930s. There is quite a lot going on with this piece. It’s bulbous and flared at the top with a ribbed lower section. Again this piece is in the “standard” Newtone green and brown drip glaze.

Day 25: Pates Pottery Ashtray
Photo Caption: Day 25: Greetings from Tasmania!Today’s piece is by Pates pottery out of Sydney, NSW. Although unmarked the glaze is early Pates. This apple Isle ashtray must be fairly rare as I’m yet to see another. Just in case you didn’t recognise it the outline of the ashtray is supposed to be a map of Tasmania. Just sayin….. #AustralianPottery #NSWCeramics #NSWPottery #Pottery #Ceramics #instapottery #AustralianDesign #PatesPottery #instapottery #australianceramics #365DaysofAustralianPottery

Day 22: (Part 2) Newtone Art Ware Vase – Shape 142
Photo Caption: Day 22: (Part 2) As promised earlier here is a side by side photo of the four shape 142 vases made by Bakewell Bros, all from the Newtone range of wares. The photo goes to demonstrate that although Bakewell Bros was a very big commercial pottery making everything from bricks to art wares the pieces can be as individual as the people who made and decorated them.

Day 22: (Part 1) Newtone Art Ware Vase – Shape 142
Photo Caption: Day 22: (Part 1) Today’s piece is the 4th and final example of the Bakewell’s shape 142 from the Newtone line and this one is a little special in more ways than one. Firstly and most obviously this piece is hand painted with a spray of flowers trailing down the front and back. Secondly it is signed by head paintresses at Bakewells Daisy Victoria Merton. Thirdly and most interesting to a pottery collecting nerd like me is the green paper label on the base. The label is interesting to me because it shows the factory design code for this flower design. Every glaze combination and hand painted design would have had it’s own code. I’ve only seen a handful of these labels but they are out there and I’d like to see more.

Day 21: Newtone Art Ware Vase – Shape 142
Photo Caption: Day 21: Today’s piece is by Bakewell Bros from their Newtone Art Ware line and is the 3rd shape 142 vase I have to show you. This one features a sponged finish in quite an odd glaze combo for Newtone. I included a shot of the inside because I think it looks better than the outside #AustralianPottery #AustralianArtPottery #NSWPottery #Pottery #Ceramics #instapottery #AustralianDesign #BakewellBros #Bakewells #NewtonePottery #NewtoneArtWare #Newtone #australianceramics #365DaysofAustralianPottery

Day 20: Newtone Art Ware Vase – Shape 142
Photo Caption: Day 20: Today’s piece is by Bakewell Bros from their Newtone Art Ware line and is the 2nd shape 142 piece I have. This piece is decorated in what i would refer to as the “standard” drip glaze green and brown. Chances are if you remember seeing a Newtone vase you’ve seen it in green and brown.

Day 19: Newtone Art Ware Vase – Shape 142
Photo Caption: Day 19: Today’s piece is by Bakewell Bros from their Newtone Art Ware line circa 1930s. This piece is shape 142 and is one of four I own. I’ll post the other 3 over the coming days to show the different decorating techniques being used at the time by Bakewell Bros. This piece is (for want of a better term) air brushed. I’ll also post a picture of all four side by side which will show just how hand made and individual these commercially produced pieces can be.
I also have to admit that I saw this green giant and immediately thought of my friend Liz @downtoearthvintage not sure if this is the right green for you. If not don’t despair i have a few to come I know you will like!
